Basílica de "María Auxiliadora y San Carlos"
The church and organ history
Carlo Vegezzi Bossi, Italy, 1910
The Organ
The impressive architecture and the perfect acoustics of the Basílica de "María Auxiliadora y
San Carlos" give shelter to an interesting and beautiful italian instrument that combines the
classical "ripieno" tradition and the romantic orchestral elements developped by Vegezzi Bossi.
The original system was pneumatic action. It was inaugurated in 1911 by the virtuoso organist,
Luis Ochoa. The italian composer Pietro Mascagni was present among other guests for that
occasion.
The Echo organ, in the church dome, 50 metres far from the great organ still retains
its original electric action system.
The instrument has been electrified in the last years and the original magnificent console
removed.
